Krefeld’s Cheapest Mini-Holiday: A Day at Stadtwald

As someone who was born and raised in Krefeld, I know that people often resort to bigger, ‘more exciting’ cities when they want to have a nice day out. But it doesn’t always have to be Düsseldorf for those of us in and around Krefeld when we have local gems like Stadtwald that prove the best days out are often hiding in plain sight. Especially when your bank account is begging you to stay home, Stadtwald is a great and affordable escape that makes you wonder why you ever drove anywhere further. No matter if you want to relax by yourself, have a fun time with your friends or spend a nice day out with your family, Stadtwald offers you plenty of options to shape the day to your liking.

Although I love being a city kid, the chaos and noise can get a bit too much sometimes. Whenever that overwhelming feeling hits, I escape to the Stadtwald. It is the perfect place to reconnect with nature, whether you only want to go for a quick walk or spend your whole day there. The trees, lake and open green spaces make you forget that you are only a short distance from the city centre. Together they create a peaceful atmosphere that is great for clearing your head and slowing down for a while.

Don’t mistake Stadtwald for a simple park though because there are plenty of things to do and ways to spend your day:

If you only want to have some time by yourself, you could easily walk the paths and get some steps in, eventually find a bench and read a book by the lake.

My favourite way of spending a day at Stadtwald definitely includes a picnic on the meadow though. As soon as the temperatures go up a bit and the sun is shining, you can be sure to find me laying on my blanket on the grass. I will usually bring a book or a magazine, my favourite snacks and a refreshing drink with me. Sometimes I take a journal or sketchbook with me too and make use of the park’s calmness. A picnic perfectly works as a group activity with some friends too: everyone can bring a few snacks, share drinks (we usually go for a bottle of rosé), play card games, and spend hours outside without needing to spend much money. And if simply sitting around starts to get a bit boring, Stadtwald also gives you enough space to become more active. There are several nets to play badminton, goals to play some football, you could bring a frisbee or even play some table tennis on one of the ping-pong tables. That way a chill picnic can easily turn into a fun afternoon full of movement.

Whatever you end up choosing, the Biergarten is definitely worth a visit for its lively and energetic atmosphere. 

Stadtwald isn’t only fun for students or friend groups, it is also a great choice if you plan on bringing children or dogs. The park is ideal for families, since there is plenty of space for children to run around, play games and watch ducks and geese by the lake. The absolute highlight is the big playground with several swings, sandpits and climbing frames (the one little me broke her wrist on luckily got removed, so all is well). Dog owners will probably enjoy it just as much, since there is a big meadow specifically for dogs apart from all the other green spaces that are just as suitable for a relaxed stroll or energetic play and run around.

Getting to Stadtwald is also quite simple. I usually walk about 30 minutes to Stadtwald from where I live, so I can reach my step goal and enjoy my snacks afterwards even more but if you would like to save your energy for the other activities, there are several other ways to get to the park. If you are from Krefeld, cycling there is probably one of the easiest and nicest options, especially in good weather. Otherwise, you can reach the area by public transport such as the Bus 058 to the stop "Stadtwald" or the tram lines 042/043 to Bockum and then walk the last few minutes into the park. There are also many parking options around Stadtwald, if you decide to come by car.

For preparation, you really do not need much. I would highly suggest bringing a picnic blanket, enough water, sunscreen, and maybe a light jacket if you plan on staying until the evening. Snacks are essential, and if you are going with friends, it is fun when everyone brings something different to share. Pack cards, a football, or a badminton set if you want to keep things active and bring some cash if you fancy a pedal boat or a drink at the Stadtwaldhaus. Generally, a visit to Stadtwald is as affordable as you make it – and that is exactly the point. In the end, it proves that a good day out does not need to be expensive, overplanned, or far away. Sometimes all you need is a blanket on the grass, a few snacks, a sunny afternoon, and the right people around you. It may not be Krefeld's loudest attraction, but it is definitely one of its most charming which is exactly what makes it worth visiting.
